Yarn O'Clock

There's always time for yarn…

John Arbon Textiles & Fibre Harvest snug in the heart of North Devon is one of only a handful of specialist small scale Worsted Mills, still operating in the UK.  It is a creative den of fine quality yarn and top making and luxury sock design.

Their production concept is simple – a return to the old style of textile manufacture … sourcing raw fibre (locally wherever possible) & converting it in Britain into high quality hand knit yarns & the very sock yarn used to knit their luxury British made unisex socks.

Alpaca 2-3ply Lace – a soft, lightweight and durable yarn, spun to a heavy lace weight. The natural drape and halo of alpaca lends itself to intricate lace projects.

Devonia 4ply & DK – is a beautiful blend of 3 Devon breeds – Exmoor Blueface, Devon Bluefaced Leicester and Devon Wensleydale. The Exmoor Blueface is their local sheep and brings its wonderful springy nature, the Bluefaced Leicester lends its outstandingly soft handle and lustre to the yarn, whilst the Wensleydale adds its qualities of a beautiful golden sheen and fineness of fibre.

Each shade is inspired by the work of renowned 19th century French tapestry artist Jean Lurcat. There are 14 in total and each is made up of up to 5 blended pre-dyed fibre tops to create a rich melange of colour in the spun yarn. It is lovingly worsted spun at the Mill.

Exmoor Sock – enhances the durable character and bounce of the fibre from their local Exmoor Blueface sheep – a cross breed of the Exmoor Horn (full bodied and hard-wearing) and the Bluefaced Leicester (renowned for its softness and lustre). They’ve added naturally dark browny-black Devon Zwartbles giving extra bounce and a subtle fleck of colour, plus Falklands Corriedale to enhance softness and stitch definition and a hint of Nylon for durability.. It is designed to be perfect for socks, whilst still having the versatility to suit garments and accessories that relish a hard wearing, machine washable yarn. If you fancy stripes or colourwork, Exmoor Sock is available in handy 50g skeins.
