Yarn O'Clock

There's always time for yarn…

The Knitting Goddess

The Knitting Goddess is an independent dyer of British knitting yarns, producing hand dyed yarns from British wool.  Their yarns are dyed in small batches, which means that every skein is unique and unrepeatable.

We have a number of Britsock Colour Wheels, some sock yarn and Self Striping DK, we also have in stock some project bags.

One Farm Yarn – wool from two breeds, Blue Faced Leicester (BFL) and the wonderfully named North Country Mule (a BFL Swaledale cross breed). Both flocks live at Fiddlers Green Farm near Harrogate. After shearing the 250kg of fleece were bagged up and took a 25 mile road trip to the Haworth Scouring Company.  From there the wool travelled another 20 miles to Laycock International for carding and preparation for spinning.   Another 5 mile journey got the carded wool to Laxtons for spinning, plying and skeining.  Finally, 2 months after shearing, the first batch of finished skeins travelled another 18 miles to Harrogate. That’s a journey of 72 miles in Yorkshire from sheep to dye pot. Proper Yorkshire yarn.

We have some semi-solid, multi-coloured and some 5 x 20g Colourwheels:

Britsock Colour Wheels – Britsock is a fantastic yarn which has been custom spun in the UK by John Arbon, it contains 40% British Bluefaced Leicester, 20% British Wensleydale, 20% British Alpaca and 20% nylon. Boths wools and the alpaca come from UK flocks, even the nylon was sourced in the UK. The wools and alpaca were processed in the UK, and the yarn was spun in Devon. Britsock has been spun with a high twist to make it more hard wearing. This also means that the stitch definition is fantastic, so this yarn really lends itself to texture and cables which will show up beautifully. Each colour wheel contains 12 x 10 gram skeins – so 120 grams and 480 meters in total.

Sock Yarn – is made from British wool, it’s spun in Yorkshire – and it’s gorgeous. The combination of superwash wool and nylon obviously makes this ideal for socks, but it would also work beautifully for hats, shawls, mittens, jumper. It’s soft enough to be comfortable next to your skin and hard wearing enough that your socks will last. The yarn is 75% British wool, 25% nylon – the wool is 45% British Bluefaced Leicester and 30% mixed British wool. The wool is sourced from UK flocks and is processed in the UK.

The wool has been superwash treated so if this ends up in the washing machine on a 30 degrees centigrade cycle it won’t felt.

Black Tote Bags – these bags come from BIDBI (bidbi.co.uk). All of the bags are made under Fairtrade conditions.  These heavy canvas bags are made from 100% heavy 10oz cotton canvas and has long cotton webbing straps. The bags have deep gussets so there’s lots of space in them. They measure 42cm x 37cm x 11cm / 16.5in x 14.5in x 4.5in.

Project Bags – these small bags are made from a Fairtrade cotton, and manuafactured in India in a Fairtrade certified facility. The Knitting Goddess prints the bags and they add a printed lining to make them sturdier.  The bags are printed using water based inks which are solvent free and approved by the Soil Association.

Small Project Bags

Small project bags are 29cm tall and 25cm wide. They easily will hold two 100 gram skeins of yarn.

Zipped Bags

Perfect for smaller projects, these deceptively spacious little bags will hold two 100 gram cakes of yarn and needles. They’re also ideal of makeup bags or a place to gather a collection of small essentials which will otherwise hide in the bottom of your bag.

The bags are made in a Fair Trade factory in India. The cotton is both Fair Trade and organic, so the people who produced the cotton and made the bag have been fairly treated. Heavy weight cotton canvas will ensure your bag has a long life.

The bags aren’t lined – instead all of the seams are finished with cotton tape for a neat and long lasting finish.  The bags close with a chunky metal zip, further enhanced with a screen printed and laser cut tag.

The bags have a gusset on the bottom, so measurements are

Length along zip 27cm.

Zip opening 23cm.

Height 18cm.

Width 9cm.

These zipped bags are made from sturdy 100% wool felt, wool fabric or cotton canvas so they’ll stand up to lots of use. Each bag is interfaced and lined with a heavy cotton canvas, and there are no raw seams on the inside.  There’s even a screen print on the lining.

Felt bags have a wider base and sweep out to the zip at the top.

As each bag is hand made measurements will differ slightly.

Measurements are

length along the zip 32cm

length along the base 25cm

height 20cm

width at base 8cm

Small enough to be easily carried, these bags have plenty of space for 3 or 4 skeins of yarn plus knitting pins, making them suitble for most projects.

Each bag is made from fabric which has been screen printed with one of their unique designs. Their screen prints are made with soil association approved water based ink, and are heat set to ensure durability. To keep your bag looking good for as long as possible we’d recommend spot cleaning.  If necessary bags can also be handwashed gently in cool water.
