The Fibre Co.’s story began in 2003 in an old warehouse on the working waterfront of Portland, Maine, USA with a small spinning mill, lots of raw natural fibre and owner/founder Daphne Marinopoulos’ vision of creating yarns that she couldn’t find on the retail shelves. From these humble beginnings to today’s global brand now based in the United Kingdom, we work with a variety of producers and artisans to continue creating yarns that delight and inspire the enthusiastic maker.
Amble is a fingering-weight yarn made from a blend of eco-friendly washable wool and alpaca for comfort as well as recycled nylon for strength. Although designed especially for sock knitting, this is a soft and durable yarn also great for easy-to-care-for sweaters and accessories. See shades here.
Fibre: 70% easy care Merino, 20% easy care alpaca, 10% recycled nylon
The Fibre Co.’s first brushed yarn is processed in a mill in Southern Peru, home of the alpaca. Cirro is a sport weight yarn that combines the long lustrous Suri alpaca fibre with Merino wool. The brushed effect is created by wrapping this blend around an organic cotton binder thread to achieve a light and airy yarn perfectly balanced for body and drape. Cirro creates a delightfully soft haloed fabric that is light as a feather and easily worn next to the skin. See shades here.
Fibre: 40% Suri alpaca, 40% organic cotton, 20% merino wool
Cumbria Fingering is inspired by England’s stunning northwest region with its deep blue lakes and sheep-grazed fells and valleys. It is a fingering weight yarn from a blend of fine Merino, wool from the English Masham sheep breed and Argentinian mohair. The Merino adds softness, the Masham allows for a beautiful heathered palette and the mohair creates strength and lustre. Fabrics knit from Cumbria are perfect for lighter weight garments. Many of the shades in Cumbria use a base with natural brown Masham wool, which when overdyed, allows for beautifully deep saturated tones. See shades here
Fibre: 60% merino, 30% Masham, 10% mohair
Luma – A classic DK weight yarn, Luma is inspired by the mood and light found in mid-latitude savannas—those grassland ecosystems with open canopies allowing plenty of sunlight. Daily life in mid-latitude climates, whether in the drier Mediterranean or temperate Great Plains of the USA, is best handled with a layered approach to clothing. Plant-based fibres mixed with silk and wool provide a built-in layer of warmth in winter yet lightness when required in warmer temperatures. The Luma palette includes soft neutrals and bright shades of pink, blue and green. See shades here.
Fibre: 50% Merino wool, 25% Organic cotton, 15% Linen, 10% Silk

Meadow – be they coastal, wooded or alpine, meadows are important ecosystems housing local fauna and serving as a fertile growing ground for flora of many varieties. Usually filled with grasses and other non-woody plants, the theme of lightness is everywhere in a meadow. What better name for a lace weight yarn? Meadow is the perfect lace weight yarn, spun with The Fibre Co.’s trademark blend of luxury fibres with a touch of rustic. Combining four of the most luxurious fibres—baby llama, fine merino wool, silk and linen—this 2 ply yarn is slightly heavier than a typical lace weight yarn. It is a versatile yarn that works well on a variety of needle sizes and a wide array of projects. The crisp hand and stitch definition of linen with the sheen of silk is perfectly complimented by the softness of baby llama and fine merino. A yarn for fibre lovers who like a treat on the needles and for their favourite handmades. See shades here.
